Hi~ In the following sentences, can I understand the word "requires" as meaning "something essential"?
I don't think it is same as "must". But from the context, I feel that the meaning is stronger than "need" and that without "the active process of empathy", the students cannot understand the meaning in context.
Or is it just same as "need" with no difference?
Thanks for your comments in advance~
The lowering of empathy will negatively impact social interactions
and reading comprehension. In a world of diminishing empathy, I fear
that fewer and fewer students will fully comprehend works like Shakespeare
and Cummings. Yes, they may be able to read the words, but meaning in
context requires the active process of empathy.
"must", "needs", "requires" and "something essential" are all related in meaning. ) In the context of this question, I don't see any benefit in worrying too much about the differences.
