Requesting the addition of a major field of study at a university.

Hi all!I'm currently trying to help out a friend who has wanted to go to a certain university her entire life, but the university surprisingly doesn't offer her major field of study, Music Therapy, as a program there.  We plan to write a letter to the university requesting the addition of Music Therapy to their curriculum. Any advice and tips on what to cover and how to go about writing the letter itself would be much appreciated.Thank you!

Start by listing the reasons that the university should consider this.

You should also do some research to find other universities that offer this, to cite as examples.

I hate throwing cold water on your question, but adding a major field of study is a huge cost for a school
They have to attract funding, hire PhD-level professors, develop the curriculum, etc. I seriously doubt that a letter from one prospective student, no matter how well crafted, would make any difference. If your friend can find some 500 or so other college-bound friends (or parents of high school students) who would commit to following this particular field of study at the same school, and write a joint letter, it might get more than a second glance. But anyway, nothing happens quickly. it takes years to develop a new curriculum.

In the meantime, your friend could chose to fashion their own degree with a major in psychology or education and a minor in music, and then plan for a Master's degree at another school that offers the specialty. The other choice is to go to a school that offers this degree program. Also, I'd recommend joining the professional organization and going to conferences as a student. Conferences will offer supplementary lectures and short courses.
