3. It never could have worked out for Max and me. (it never could have been successful for Max and me?).

4. We made a date to go riding together at one o'clock. (on a date we went riding together?)

5. This whole thing was getting more complicated by the minute. (getting more complicated quickly?).

6. I forced another fake laugh. (false laughing?).

7. I blinked in disbelief.

8. Well, I must be off now. I expect we'll be seeing quite a bit of each other, Samantha. (I must leave now?).
