Reprimand

Can the word ‘reprimand’ be used in everyday conversation or is it too formal?

I know that I can use ‘tell off’ or ‘scold’ instead but I was just wondering if ‘reprimand’ would work as well.

reprimand sounds to me formal and 'official'.

tell off is more casual and more common.

scold is used primarily for dealing with small children.

eg If I spill my coffee on our new carpet, my wife doesn't reprimand me or scold me. She tells me off.

This is old-fashioned, rare and very formal.
