Vocabulary

Represent/(Make up)

What is the difference between "Represent" and "Make up"? and when to use each?

"Rainforests make up about seven percent of the earth's land surface."

Why was "make up" used and not "represent"?

note: I "feel" that it's "make up" but I don't know why it is.

Thanks in advance,
Shimo
