Represent (again)

Dear All
Can you please explain the use of "represent" in these lyrics from Katy Perry. I have also heard this usage elsewhere ("Family Guy" comes to mind), but it means nothing to an English person:
California girls
We're undeniable
Fine, fresh, fierce
We got it on lock
West coast represent
Now put your hands up
Thanks in advance

That's slang from the states. You couldn't have picked a harder one. This slang probably originated from rappers and thugs.

  • Its common for rappers to blurt out things like "respect" or "represent" when they are talking to people about their crew or gang.
  • I don't really know a better way to explain it.
