Reporting words

If I want to report what another person has said and I want to use the speaker’s exact words, what should I do?

Would you please give me some examples?

Thank you.

You need 'direct speech':

Examples (https://www.ef.com)
  • She says, "What time will you be home?"
  • She said, "What time will you be home?" and I said, "I don't know! "
  • "There's a fly in my soup!" screamed Simone.
  • John said, "There's an elephant outside the window."

This is called a quotation. It is some text between quotation marks. In text, it can be indented and italicized.

“I’m a success today because I had a friend who believed in me and I didn’t have the heart to let him down.
