reporting verbs

Is there an easy way to know if I write after a reporting verb a gerund or infinitive ?. I know after a preposition, but there are lot of others ?
Can somebody help me out ? thanks

I think it might be helpful if you provided a couple of examples showing the kind of context you are envisaging. Typically reporting verbs take a "that" clause. g.

I think it might be helpful if you provided a couple of examples showing the kind of context you are envisaging. Typically reporting verbs take a "that" clause. Some may be able to take object + to-infinitive, e.g. "I advised him to stop". Some may be able to take a gerund as an object; e.g. "I remember stopping". I don't know whether this is the sort of thing you have in mind.

Are both correct? When do you put one and when the other one?

Reporting verbs? Here are a few:

He told me to go home.
He advised Jim to take calculus.
He said that Jim was a math genius.
He reported that the news was good.

For general verbs, memorize the list
