I might be splitting hairs, but do the Police hand over/release dead bodies to the relatives? I think this is done by the Coroner/hospital authorities/mortuary.

Optilang, the context is like this: The man died in police custody after being beaten. Now the police want his relatives to collect the deadbody from the police station. Is "hand over" not appropriate here?
Does the police release any dead person? Thanks

I think if the person died in police custody, there would have to be a post-mortem to establish the cause of death. The body would then be in the hands of the Coroner and he would arrange the release.

It would depend a lot on which country this happened in. In some countries the police have many powers, and can simply instruct the family to arrange for burial. (The English is good.) - A.

Avangi, you are right. We are talking about a situation where there is no rule of law and democracy.

Optilang, you have been more concerned about the legal implications of the death in custody than the correctness of my sentence. But you have every right to ask and know about the context. I have full respect for that. In a way, your concern has impressed me.

Thanks both of you.
