Reported speech with time clauses

The last time I went there, I got hurt.

Five years ago, he said that the last time he went/had gone there, he got/ had gotten hurt.

From what I know, when we have a time clause, we can always choose to leave it as it is and not backshift. But would it be possible to say "the last time he had gone there"? Also, what do I do with the main clause? I think both the past perfect and the past simple are fine. Thank you.
