Reported Speech with 'thought'. Unit 7

Hi,

Why is it option 'b' better than option 'a' for reported speech?

Coke thought, “I have to take the chance. This is the only place I can find warm clothes and food!”

a) Coke thought (that) he had to take the chance, and (that) that was the only place he could find warm clothes and food

b) Coke thought that he had to take the chance, and (that) that this would be the only place he could find warm clothes and food.

Thanks in advance

On the contrary, I would suggest that A is better than B because 'this' (here and now) normally regresses to 'that' (there and then).

Hi Mister Micawber,

Thank you for your reply. A was my option, but someone here here told me B. That why I was doubting. Not anymore.

Best,
