Honestly, it was just automatic writing, 1b3– but I believe that 'should' is the standard indirect casting of the imperative.

I agree that in this case. With a simple imperative sentence, we often use just an infinitive.

Mary said, "Go home, Jim". .....Mary told Jim to go home.
