Reported Speech. Need help

Hi teachers,



The policeman said, “Hello, Mrs. Bentley. I’m from the village police station. The sergeant sent me. I’ve got something to tell you.”



Reported Speech. Is it correct?



The policeman greeted Mrs. Bentley and said (that) he was from the village police station and that the sergeant had sent him because he had got something to tell her.

Correct. You could also write just, "... because he had something to tell her." The idiom "have got" is not often used in the past.

I guess i have two mistakes, well maybe more.

a) Baxter said what he meant by he had almost caught him and asked if he caught him or if he hasn’t.

b) Baxter said what he meant by he had almost caught him and asked whether he caught him or hasn’t.

Thank you for your suggestion. I also thought it was too complex.

I will just say Baxter said, "Did he catch him or not?" For the exercise.

By the way, I am an English teacher, trying to be one, but I'm still learning. I always do!
