Reported speech - any exceptions?

Are there exceptions when it comes to reported speech?
I was told that only main verbs need to be changed. Is that true?

Eg : She asked, " Did he find the wallet he was looking for?"

Is it?

a. She asked if he had found the wallet he was looking for.
(with 'Did...find' as the main verbs and needs to be changed while 'was looking' is not a main verb and remains unchanged)

b. She asked if he had found the wallet he had been looking for.
(With BOTH verbs changed from simple past/past continuous to past perfect)
