Reported Speech

Please consider two below sentences:

65% of the parents participating in a questionnaire conducted in 2015 said that they do not know how to properly teach their children about social conduct. 

65% of the parents participating in a questionnaire conducted in 2015 said that they did not know how to properly teach their children about social conduct.

If I want to say that the parents had no idea about teaching their children about social conduct at the moment they were interviewing and we do not know whether the parents now know about teaching their children about social conduct or not, which one of two sentences I should select to be grammatically correct?

I thought that you might like to try, but no matter.


Say did not know. Using Simple Past when reporting what was said is always correct. You can use Present nt Tense if the thing is still true today, but Simple Past is not wrong.

eg 10 minutes ago, he said that he loves me / that he loved me.

eg 10 years ago, he said that he loved me.
