I think I passed that exam a long time ago.

1) He said he thought he'd passed that exam a long time before. (standard)

1) He said he thought he'd passed that exam a long time ago. (reported shortly after it was uttered, say, 2,3 hours)

'Ago' has nothing to do with the length of time since utterance. 'Ago' means 'before now', that is all.
