Reported speech

Hello.
I was doing an English grammar test when I stumbled upon this question

"He told me that if he .... captain of a ship he ... me on a voyage around the world."

I responded with "had been / would take" but it looks like it's wrong and correct is "were / would take".
I don't understand why... isn't it supposed to be reported speech?
