Reported Speech?

Sometimes when we change direct speech into reported speech we have to change time expressions too.

When do I have to use "that day"? When I don't remember when exactly the speaker said it?
When do I have to use " the week before" or "the previous week" or "the previous day"?

He said he had an exam that day.

'I broke my leg last week.'
He said he had broken his leg the week before/the previous week'

'I lost my wallet yesterday.'
She said she had lost her wallet the previous day/the day before.
