I don't know why some native English speaker insist on "this" as the only correct option for this reported speech.
I personally prefer: He asked me what I was doing then. (What do you think, Califjim?)
I personally prefer: He asked me what I was doing then. (What do you think, Califjim?)

FreeguyHe asked me what I was doing then."then" and "at that time" mean the same thing so you can use either one.
