reported speech

You meet John, a friend of yours. He asks you lots of questions. Tell another friend what John asked you. Use reported speech. (This is a question of a specific grammar book.)

- What are you doing now?
- He asked me what I was doing at that/this time.

Which option is correct? this or that?

I don't know why some native English speaker insist on "this" as the only correct option for this reported speech.
I personally prefer: He asked me what I was doing then. (What do you think, Califjim?)

"then" and "at that time" mean the same thing so you can use either one.
