Reported Speech

Hi there, I'm from Germany. We are learning 'Reported Speech' at the moment.

When someone says "I went to New York last year"
I say "He said he had gone to New York THE YEAR BEFORE"
But i forgot it. I said "He said he had gone to New York LAST YEAR"
Is it absolutely wrong?
