Reported speech

Jim says: ''I really wanted to come to the party''

Jim said that: ................................... to the party.

I filled in: ''Jim said that he really wanted to come to the party.''

my teacher said that the correct answer is: ''Jim said that he had really wanted to come to the party''

Why is my answer incorrect? and does my answer sound weird to native speakers?

Thanks
