Reported Speech

When we change a sentence from direct into indirect speech, is it necessary to change "next week/month/year..." to "the next/following week/month/year..."?

Iin the book "Oxford guide to English grammar" and "Practical English usage", it is said that we should; but when I read the book "Advanced language practice", there was no change in the examples given so I really confused Emotion: sad
