can we say that in reported speech .....he told me that he will pay...or is it like he told me that he would pay

It depends.

Imagine you're an accountant working for a general contractor. He wants to know why a client hasn't paid yet.

He told me that he will pay for the work once it's completed.

This sentence is perfectly acceptable if the work has yet to be completed.

He told me that he would pay for the work once it was completed.

But I think we can use would even for the first case.

Hi,

'Would ' is always OK.

But you can say 'will' if it refers to something that is 'future' at the time of reporting the speech.

eg He told me yesterday that he will pay tomorrow.
