" In reported speech which of the following is corect? John told his form teacher Miss Tan that he had not known that she disliked him. John told his form teacher Miss Tan that he did not know that she disliked him.

  • " In reported speech which of the following is corect?
  • John told his form teacher Miss Tan that he had not known that she disliked him.
  • John told his form teacher Miss Tan that he did not know that she disliked him.
  • Both sound acceptable to me.
  • Version 1 sounds much more careful, and I think in everyday English such a meaning would often be communicated in a different way, perhaps by adding extra sentences giving the infomation in a different way.
