Reported speech

Hi,
what is done with "it" in reported speech? Do you keep it or change into anything?

"I like it," she said.
She said that she liked it.

IMO, it is sufficiently remote to work well in the past too.
However, you could change it into that/that thing, if you feel more remoteness/distance (brought on by the past) is necessary.

As long as your listener knows what the "it" is/was, keep it.
