reported question lesson

I'm currently planning a lesson on reported speech, more specifically reported questions.
i'm using the Test Teach Test method to teach the class.
Can anyone suggest a way of demonstrating how one reports a question in a grammatical context in the 'teach' stage?

for example, Person 'X' says, 'can i speak to mr bell?' would be 'Person X asked if he could speak to Mr Bell'.

what exactly is changing here grammatically speaking? and can anyone suggest an effective way of demonstrating this...

Many thanks

' R: Person X asked if he could speak to Mr Bell. What's happening seems straightforward to me: At the time of R (the report), X's speech is in the past, and therefore the present verbs change to past verbs. Are you looking for more than that?

  • ' R: Person X asked if he could speak to Mr Bell.
  • What's happening seems straightforward to me: At the time of R (the report), X's speech is in the past, and therefore the present verbs change to past verbs.
  • Are you looking for more than that?
  • As for demonstrating it, just line up the students and have them relay a message: that should be graphic enough.

Thanks for your reply.

I appreciate the time shift, and it makes sense to me as a native speaker. however, I am unsure how I can grammatically explain the time shift to students. to be more more precise, 'can' becomes 'could', yet the verb to speak stays exactly the same... is there a rule that applies in all circumstances?

Speak is not a finite verb: it is an infinitive.
