You are student in the Information Technology Department of an international college. You have been asked to write a report for an international survey about how students in your college use the Internet. You should cove all the following points:

• Current use (e.g. how much it’s used, where it’s used and what for)
• Benefits and disadvantages (if any)
• Future use it the college (e.g. in classroom).

The Internet among students

Introduction

The aims of this report are to provide an overview of the importance placed by the Internet in my college, indicate whether it is beneficial or not and make recommendations on its future practicality in school.

Current situation

I conducted a survey among students from 15 to 19 and discovered that a large proportion accesses the Internet on their PCs, while seven out ten join the college Internet Cafe during break time. 92% of the first cited spend up to twelve hours in the front of the screen listening to music and watching programmes of entertainment, but definitely, the most popular are social networks and communication services, which allow them to permanently keep in touch with friends and news.

For and against opinions

A significant number of respondents confirmed their contentment towards this technologic development, giving the following arguments:

• It offers cheap means of communication
• It is a modern way of enjoying free time
• It supplies a wide range of information that can be accessed instantly

On the other hand, the only generally stated drawback is the addiction that contributes to several side effects like significantly reduced time for study, patterns of behaviour, mental and physical disorders.

Recommendations

In the light of the results of the survey, the introduction of online courses seems to be the best solution. It would not only turn the lessons into a more attractive way of learning, but also teach the young how to effectively take advantage of the Internet assets.
