Reply to 'Cheers!'

Hello,

When someone says 'Cheers!' to us, what do we normally reply with? Do we say the following?

"Cheers" as well
"That's alright."

"You're welcome."
"No problem."

Any suggestion, please?

I understand 'Cheers' is the same as saying 'Thank you'. Is it not natural to reply with 'no problem' or 'you're welcome'?

Incidentally, is it natural to reply with 'that's alright' to 'thank you'?

It depends on the context. 'Cheers' is a common toast: in that case, everyone raises their glass and says 'Cheers' also. Some people use it as a casual 'Farewell', in which case you might reply 'See you!'

Incidentally, is it natural to reply with 'that's alright' to 'thank you'?-- It is casual, so only do so with close associates. Often, 'thank you' requires a more courteous 'you're welcome'.

OK, thank you for your answers.

Just to confirm my understanding, suppose I did someone a favour and he said 'Cheers!', therefore it means 'thank you' then I can say 'you're welcome' or 'no problem'?

I often hear British people say 'Cheers' when I have just done them a favour. However, I'm not sure about what to respond with politely.

Again, I'd say there's a cultural/contextual aspect involved with 'thanks'.

When someone in a store hands me my change and I say 'Thanks' (or perhaps 'Cheers' if I'm in a British context), I really don't require any response at all.

In fact, like many people, I find the in

Hi Clive,

I really appreciate you helping me here. I hope you don't mind me asking a few more questions.

Suppose I did someone a favour, not because it was part of my job, but I did it out of total kindness. Would it be okay to reply with 'no problem' when he says 'Cheers!' (in a British context)?
If 'no problem' is irritating for many people, perhaps 'you're welcome'?

If 'no problem' is irritating for many people, perhaps 'you're welcome'? Yes.

I'm sorry, I'm adjusting to this new environment with a different culture fr

ClivePeople will just focus on the fact that you are being friendly and polite. They won't start to critique your command of English.
Good point.

There isn't a strict rule for that. People are free to choose what they want to say.
