From what I understand The poster said he'd use the former rather than the latter, but wouldn't you use the latter. the latter sound better. Which would you say here : THe cat miaowed while it walked/The cat walked while it miaowed.

I think miaowed while it walked because the walking is usually more continuous.(or ongoing)
