REPLACE WITH OR BY

"But this satisfaction disappeared very quickly and was replaced with/by a bitter taste of immense sadness."
Which one is correct?

You see it both ways. I recommend "by" in passive constructions and "with" in active. George lost his job when he was replaced by a trained pigeon.
