You can look up meanings in a dictionary. I will give you a few examples

1. John is fluent in both English and Spanish. He can easily switch from one language to the other whenever he needs. (only switch works here)

2. John and I got into a fight last night. Oh boy, it was quite a nasty exchange of words. (only exchange works here)

I think this is a terribly difficult question to answer, even for a native speaker who can easily recognise when the right or wrong word is being used in some specific situation. I thought about it for a couple of minutes and then gave up, I'm afraid.

No, not really.

In the above sentence switch functions like an on/off switch. Exchange is used for more permanent situations like

Your car is so cool. Do you want to exchange cars with me (for a week)? (less formal - Do you want to switch cars with me?)

Also, you exchange something if there is nothing technically wrong with it, but it's the wrong color or size or the wrong product. You replace something if there is something technically wrong with it (e.g. if a gadget is broken or has a hole in it).
