Replace something

I would like to know what's the word for when you're/were using something to replace something else.

The word is on the tip of mu tongue I just can't quite catch it, I think it starts with a 'd' or something. I really don't know.

If anyone can help me that would be great!

sf1967 the word for when you're/were using something to replace something else I assume you aren't simply looking for a word like "replacement" or "substitute"? Could you give an example sentence with a blank where the word should go?
