Repented of / Repented for

Dear all,

Kindly tell me which of the following sentence is correct.

1.I repented for my sins

2.I repented of my sins

I would expect simply "I repented my sins", but "of" is also correct enough with a different meaning, although you normally repent "of" your "actions" or the like. When you define them as sins up front like that, "of" sounds redundant. I would never use "for".
