Repeating verbs

1) His fate would now depend more on his friend than it did on his own family.
Is this a good alternative for 'rather than'?

2) Moses prayed to a God that was present nowhere and (was) yet feared all over Israel.

Is (was) necessary?

3) He thought about the basket of fruits and the manner in which they had poisoned the child.
Since I say basket of fruits, is it necessary that I say 'it had poisoned' instead of 'they.' I use 'they' because I want to refer to fruits rather than to the basket.
