Repairer vs repairman

Hi,

Are these two words equally common in modern English?

Are they 100% interchangeable (say, like in 'TV repairer' VS 'TV repairman')
Or maybe, for some nouns XXX (they should be called determiners in this case?), the word combination 'XXX repairer' is common enough whereas 'XXX repairman" is not (or vice versa)?

Hope my question makes sense...

I believe that they are interchangeable. However, I'd use "repairman" because it humanizes the person doing the repairing. "Repairer" sounds a tad impersonal.

I see. Thanks!

On the other hand, as soon as we opt for 'repairman', we will have to also take into consideration "repairwoman' or even 'repairperson' (smiley)?? (just a joke of course)

only if you want to be politically correct . . . Emotion: smile
