Renounced

Hi, What should I use here for "Renounced" abandoned or Gave up on?
Abandonded was the first word that came to my mind in this context for Renounced

"The largest body of the Mormons, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, renounced polygamy in 1890 and officially Mormonism forbids the practice."

renounce = publicly relinquish, I'd say. Have a look at this:

Abandon, relinquish, renounce mean to giveup all concern in something. Abandon means to give up or discontinue any further interest in something because of discouragement, weariness, distaste, or the like: to abandon one's efforts. Relinquish implies being or feeling compelled to give upsomething on

Did you read of the difference between 'abandon' and 'relinquish'? You must decide from your reading why the Mormons renounced the practice.
