renaming the relitive pronoun in an appositve

Is this something you have to do?

e.g. "Jimmy Joe, known for his amazing guitar skills, formed a..." Or would I be forced to insert 'who' before 'known'?

It's OK. You can either say it the way you have, or say

e.g. "Jimmy Joe, who is known for his amazing guitar skills, formed a..."
