Remove 'so as' from the sentence?

1. Richard sat in our midst so as to be equidistant from all of us.

2. Richard sat in our midst to be equidistant from all of us.

Is it perfectly fine to remove 'so as' in this sentence or is it much better to keep it? Thank you.

I think both work. For me, "in our midst" and "equidistant from all of us" do not go together tremendously well.
