Both the auxiliary verb and the main verb have been removed here, whereas the title gives the instruction to remove the main verb.

Continuing with the exercise "Mary has dinner" would have been the answer.. the removing of the verb "cooked" completely changes this sentence. What is left indicates that Mary has in fact consumed the food.
