Remnant / remnants

Hello,

"A new police force was formed from the remnants of the army."

Are there any reasons why "remnants" must be plural in this sentence? Or perhaps "remnant" would do equally well?

Thank you.

I see no real difference here Perhaps - the remnant suggests the army was reduced to a small remaining piece. the remnants suggests there were several small remaining pieces. Clive
