remind [OF]

How come in sentence 1 the preposition 'of' isn't used and in sentence 2 it is? Am I mistaken? Should of be inserted in 1?

Remind me what was said at the meeting.
I was reminded of what was said at the meeting.

Remind me what was said at the meeting. I do occasionally see this form used, and while I don't know if it's wrong or not, I would prefer to insert "of". ] of" is used when there is a fact, thought, or previous event that is being brought to memory.
