Question

Hello, would you please tell me what's the meaning of 'remember through' ?

e.g. "Abused cats may seem to remember through fear, owners that mistreated them or worse resorted to hurt them." (from http://hubpages.com/hub/Do-Cats-Have-Good-Memory )

Hi,

It is not a phrasal verb.THROUGH is independant and has the meaning of"by/by means of".

e.g:You can only succeed through hard work.

The comma in the original sentence is not correctly used.

Hi,
I think there's something wrong with the sentence , it should be continued this way: "Abused cats may seem to remember through fear,owners that mistreated or worse restorted to hurt them,.......
I mean "owners that...........them" is an apposition and should be between two commas so "through" has a partial meaning.

Let me know please.Of course ,firstly there's a question about your recent sentence"you are misunderstanding".....As far as I know the verbs like :understand,believe,....are not conjucated in continuous tense.Isn't it better to be changed into S.P.T:You misunderstand....?

Here is the correct sentence with correct punctuation.

Abused cats may seem to remember, through fear, owners that mistreated them or, worse, resorted to hurting them.

Here's the underlying meaning.

Abused cats may seem to remember owners.

They remember the owners through fear.

The owners are people that mistreated them.

The owners are people that resorted to hurting them.

Resorting to hurting them is worse than mistreating them.

It's fine to say 'You are misunderstanding . . . '. The Continuous softens the statement, makes it more polite. 'You misunderstand . . . ' iis also fine, but it is stronger, more direct, even somewhat harsher.

1-Thanks so much for being accurate.....but I think we can simplify the sentence this way: Abused cats may seem to remember the owners, that mistreated them.............resorted to hurt them, through fear.

2-"Misundersting" can be true but as a noun:"We had a slight misundersting over the sentence" ..But maybe it's used informally as you noted.

The structure is You resort to something.

eg They resorted to violence

eg They resorted to hurting . . .

But not They resorted to hurt . . .

2-"Misunderstanding" can be true but as a noun:"We had a slight misunderstanding over the sentence" ..But maybe it's used informally as you noted.

Why do you say 'maybe'?
