Remain silent or stay silent?

Is there any difference between "to remain silent" and "to stay silent"?

If so, when should I use each of them?

Would you please give me some examples?

Thank you.

teal lime Is there any difference between "to remain silent" and "to stay silent"? I can't think of any situation where there would be any significant difference in meaning. "remain" is a slightly higher-register word than "stay", so you may find "remain silent" used more in writing and "stay silent" in speech (I'm just comparing these two; obviously there are other ways to say it too, such as "keep quiet").
