Why can't ' remain' be the correct answer? I think last and remain have the similar meaning.

If we are sensible in how we use the resources they will _______ ... indefinitely. But if we use them wastefully and excessively they will soon run out and everyone will suffer.

"To last" can describe a supply or quantity which is gradually becoming depleated.

"To remain" describes a thing which retains its original form.

But we can say, "Only a small portion remains."

That is, it's not the "resources" which remain, but a small portion thereof.

It's an arguable distinction. Nothing which is being consumed can last indefinitely without being replenished.

So you could argue that if the resources can last forever they can "remain."

But on the other hand, "indefinitely" can sometimes simply mean for an unspecified length of time.

Do you think the gasoline in our tank will last until we get across the desert? (comon usage)

Do you think the gasoline in our tank will remain until we get across the desert? (absurd - would be taken to mean "all of it")
