"remain mum" ? what does it mean??

"In recent months, the studious star made a worldwide college tour that involved many stops on the East Coast and Great Britain. But although her "Potter" co-star Daniel Radcliffe previously told Britain's Guardian newspaper that Emma was attending Brown, the actress remained mum on the subject until now."

I don't understand "remained mum", is it slang??

Thanks in advance

Yes, but what are the origins of this expression?

Nothing special-- just 'remain' + 'mum'. 'Mum' = 1350–1400; ME momme; imitative of the sound of trying to remain silent.

Hi,

I saw a movie titled "Keeping mum" a couple of years ago, and thought the fixed frase was "keep mum". (Actually, the title of the movie was a play on words, as there were both a mum reappearing after many years and a secret awaiting to be unvealed).
