Relying on

Which one is right:
"Relying on tried and proven methods often times prevent lamentable consequences."
"Relying on tried and proven methods oftentimes precludes lamentable consequences."
I actually know the second one is right, but why???

Top answer

" I actually know the second one is right, but why??? Because the singular subject 'relying' requires a singular verb, 'precludes'. And because 'oftentimes' is one word, not two.

Are you asking why 'prevent' as opposed to 'precludes' in terms of vocabulary?
Or are you asking about the -s ending on 'precludes'? The verb must match the subject in number.
