Vocabulary

"relieve" and "alleviate"

Hello.

I really want to know the difference between "relieve" and "alleviate".

"relieve a pain" "alleviate a pain", "relieve a problem""alleviate a problem"... I'm confused.

Please help.

Thank you in advance!

As with 'correct' and 'rectify', 'alleviate' differs mostly by being more formal. Where pain is concerned, 'relief' can be a total (if temporary) elimination, while 'alleviation' is only a lessening.
