Reliant on camouflage and deception, on the rhetoric of the believable lie, it is an act both audacious and self-effacing.

Hi,

Could you please explain the underlined part to me?

Also, [ and I know it's a silly question] I want to know the difficulty level of this sentence. Would a (native) senior grade student understand it easily?

Art forgery is a peculiar curse. Reliant on camouflage and deception, on the rhetoric of the believable lie, it is an act both audacious and self-effacing.

Thanks,

Tom

Rhetoric is the art of speaking persuasively. A believable lie is a false statement that appears to be true, one that you would not suspect of being false. I would take the sentence to mean, roughly, that the forgery makes you think it's real because it looks real, it has the details that make it seem convincing.
