Relax:

In conclusion, I prefer going shopping in shopping malls just because there you can have a walk and relax : there are no cars honking at you and no sidewalks full of stressed people that push you because they are late! What chaos!

Please explain the use of colon in "relax:..."

Is it correctly used?

Top answer

"Is it correctly used? That is a matter of style (and opinion). The colon can be used to introduce a defining statement like that, but it is probably better to save it for more solid instances in more formal writing.

  • A semicolon is more like it in this case, but I would simply start a new sentence because the reader wouldn't have to decode any punctuation that way.

It is the author's choice. Compared to starting a new sentence, the colon has slightly more suggestion that "there are no cars honking at you ... etc." is the reason why you can relax (though of course we would understand this well enough anyway).

In modern writing style, there should not be a space before the colon.
