Relative pronouns

Could anyone please explain this:

John, who is my best friend, borrowed my bicycle yesterday.
--> (correct) Yesterday I lent my bicycle to John, my best friend.
--> (incorrect) Yesterday I lent my bicycle to John who is my best friend.

Why is the second sentence incorrect? Please help. Thanks in advance.

Because the name 'John' defines the friend, the following clause ('who...friend) is non-defining and must be preceded by a comma:

Yesterday I lent my bicycle to John, who is my best friend.
